The Town of Little Elm water supplier North Texas Municipal Water District (NTWMD) is planning to perform its annual system maintenance from March 2 to March 30.
As part of the regular disinfecting process, chloramine, a combination of chlorine and ammonia, is added to the water to maintain water quality.
During the annual system maintenance period, the NTMWD will suspend adding ammonia and only add chlorine during the water treatment process.
NTMWD performs this annual maintenance to maintain the regional system and year-round water quality and to keep the water safe from illness-causing microorganisms, such as parasites and viruses.
As Little Elm gets its water from the NTMWD, residents may notice a more distinct chlorine smell or taste to tap water; however, water remains safe for use and consumption.
